Conservation

Isabelle blends traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques to promote and ensure the preservation of glass.

Each project is unique and approached accordingly, delivering high standards of conservation ethics, documentation, research, and physical treatment, whilst also accommodating practicalities such as location, environment, and cost. This approach has developed through Isabelle’s practical experience at exceptional stained glass studios in Canterbury, London, and York, and is rooted in a strong academic basis of her MA in Stained Glass Conservation and Heritage Management and staying up to date with current research by attending and presenting at national and international conferences.

Isabelle is able to advise on and undertake all aspects of conservation and restoration work for stained glass of all sizes and styles.

Work includes but is not limited to:

  • Reports and Guidance

    • Condition reports for in situ windows and stored collections

    • Full conservation treatment reports including digital photography and diagrams

    • Advice on conservation, storage, handling, presentation, and maintenance of stained glass

    • Art-historical and technical research

  • Practical work in situ and in the studio concerning issues associated with

    • Glass; including cleaning, repair of simple and complex breaks, and replacements of broken or missing pieces (including with painted restoration pieces)

    • Lead; including cleaning, repair of broken leads and solder joints, releading (partial and more extensive), and bowing

    • Paint; including consolidation, enhancement, and cleaning of fragile and lost paint

    • Structure; including installation and removal, framing, ties, waterproofing, and environmental protective glazing
