Green Glass

This collection is an exploration of sustainability in the craft of stained glass and is largely inspired by the natural world in and around Cambridge.

The creation of stained glass uses a high amount of energy, particularly the raw material of glass. Indeed, the high cost of production has led many glass producers to cease flat sheets production, endangering stained glass as a heritage craft. With this in mind, Isabelle has explored the use of everyday glass, reconsidering glass that we so often throw away without a second thought.

The reuse of glass from bottles, particularly wine bottles, reveals unexpected beauty. From the gorgeous array of tones in the glass, to the unexpected shapes of fragments, each bottle creates a unique arrangement. Isabelle has created work by fusing the glass and by flattening it in a similar way to mouthblown cylinder glass to create a limited amount of sheet glass.

This glass has inspired her to capture a series of idyllic Cambridge landscapes, and a collection of decorative bowls.

These landscape scenes center on the River Cam and the greenery nurtured beside it, ‘bottling’ memories as well as the timelessness of dreamy and decadent days in Cambridge.

The decorative bowls are abstract, with their inherent tension as fragmented pieces softened by the tactile smoothing of glass edges in the kiln. The overlapping of pieces creates depth of colour and movement as the bowls catch the light. These bowls are perfect for holding small items as well as being their own statement pieces in the home.

Isabelle creates works from her own supply of glass bottles, however if you have a meaningful bottle you would like to be turned into art please get in contact.
